Maintenance Guide

Here you’ll find our tips for taking the best care of your kitchen. With proper maintenance, your kitchen will stay beautiful for years and age in the unique way that only wood can.

Wood

Our cabinet frames, backs, shelves, drawers, and door profiles are all made from solid 20mm finger-jointed pine.

Drawer bottoms are made from 7mm pine plywood, and door panels from 5mm pine plywood.

When you purchase a kitchen from us, you can choose whether you want it completely untreated, primed with oil, or fully painted.

Untreated

All parts of our kitchen cabinets are made of wood, a living material that changes with humidity. It is therefore important to treat the wood with oil to protect it from dirt and moisture, increase its dimensional stability, and prevent excessive warping or twisting.

We recommend applying a generous coat of Linseed Oil Primer before assembly.

Apply plenty of oil and let it sit for about 12 hours to allow the wood to absorb as much oil as possible.

Then work in any excess oil with a cloth following the wood grain, and wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.

Preferably use a light-colored cloth to avoid transferring color. Never use cleaning agents containing abrasives, alcohol, thinner, ammonia, or other scratching particles.

Cabinets, doors, and drawers should be immediately wiped dry with a cloth after exposure to water spills.

Primed with Oil

Our kitchens primed with oil are treated with Selders Linseed Oil Primer. The interior cabinet parts generally do not require additional oiling, but it’s a good idea to check them once a year and oil if needed.

If there is a risk of exposure to moisture, we recommend oiling them at least once a year.

Parts particularly exposed include cabinet sections near microwaves, ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, kettles, coffee machines, and other appliances that emit heat and/or moisture.

Fully Painted

Our fully painted kitchens are first primed and then spray-coated with a two-component acid-hardening topcoat that meets high standards for coverage, scratch resistance, durability, and appearance.

Remember:

  • Use common household cleaning agents.
  • Do not use products that can scratch or dissolve the surface. Avoid solvents, scouring powders, steel wool, etc.
  • Moisten the surface from bottom to top, but clean from top to bottom to avoid streaks. Wipe dry afterward!

Any damage to the wood should be immediately oiled or touched up to prevent moisture and dirt from penetrating.

If the surface is damaged, you can always sand the wood—one of the great advantages of a wooden kitchen!

After sanding, the wood must always be re-treated from the base. If a damage occurs, you can use a water-based wood paint in the same NCS code and gloss level as your original kitchen.

OBS!

Steam from appliances such as kettles and dishwashers can cause damage to kitchen doors and cabinets.

Avoid placing appliances that produce a lot of steam under kitchen cabinets.

If a door or cabinet is exposed to excessive water, it is important to immediately wipe it dry with a cloth.

Wooden Countertops

Our solid wood countertops are made from carefully selected pine or oak.

You can choose to receive the countertop untreated or primed with oil upon delivery, depending on how much of the initial treatment you want to handle yourself.

Pine countertops are available both with and without naturally occurring knots.

Untreated Wooden Countertop

When you purchase an untreated countertop, it is important to oil it yourself before use. The oil protects the wood from moisture, dirt, and wear, and helps preserve the countertop’s beautiful surface over time.

How to prime an untreated wooden countertop:

  1. Apply a generous amount of oil over the entire surface.
  2. Let the oil sit for about 12 hours so the wood can absorb it thoroughly.
  3. Work in any excess oil with a cloth following the direction of the wood grain.
  4.  Then wipe the surface completely dry with a light-colored, lint-free cloth that won’t transfer color.

Take care of your
wooden countertop

During the first month, you should oil the countertop as needed until it is fully saturated.

After that, we recommend repeating the treatment as necessary.

For more detailed guidance, please refer to Selder & Company AB’s instruction manual.

Remember:

Wood is a living material and can be sanded as needed. After sanding, the entire oil treatment must be reapplied from the beginning.

Avoid placing hot objects directly on the wood surface, such as pots, pans, or kitchen appliances.

Water and spills should always be wiped up immediately to prevent the wood from swelling, cracking, or discoloring.

Appliances that emit continuous heat, such as coffee makers and toasters, should always be placed on a heat-resistant surface.

Primed wooden countertop

If you choose to have your countertop primed with oil by us, the first step of the treatment is already done. This means the wood has received initial protection against moisture and dirt. However, for the oil protection to be long-lasting, the countertop must be fully treated after installation before use.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Apply a thin layer of oil to all visible surfaces and edges.
  2. Allow the oil to fully absorb into the countertop, then wipe away any excess oil that the wood has not absorbed.
  3. Let the countertop rest for at least 8 hours before it comes into contact with water or is put into use.

Continue to oil the countertop regularly during the first few weeks until the wood is fully saturated. After that, oil the countertop as needed.
